Dr. Sugiyama selected as 2016 Highly Cited Researcher
Clarivate Analytics (formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters) announced the latest list of Highly Cited Researchers, comprising a total of 3,265 scientists from around the world selected in 21 research areas. The index uses data from papers published during the past 11 years to find the most highly cited researchers in the world. The current list includes 76 scientists from Japan, including 14 from RIKEN selected from four research areas.
Based on Essential Science Indicators (ESI), the index looks at articles with the highest 1% of citations (Highly Cited Papers) in 21 areas covering the natural and social sciences, and selects around 3,000 researchers whose papers are still highly cited after a number of years. Of the researchers chosen this year, 76 belonged to Japanese institutions. The index this year uses a database that covers the eleven years from January 2004 to December 2014. Dr. Sugiyama was chosen as one of 138 researchers (seven Japanese) in the area of pharmacology & toxicology.
Dr. Sugiyama was also selected as one of 7,032 highly cited researchers in 2001, when he was at the University of Tokyo, and was chosen as one of 3,215 in 2014. He was also chosen in 2015 and 2016. It is very unusual for a single researcher to be chosen on four occasions during a period covering 15 years or more, and this shows the level of recognition that Dr. Sugiyama’s work has gained internationally.
