Dr. Sugiyama selected as 2017 Highly Cited Researcher


Clarivate Analytics (formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters) announced the latest list of Highly Cited Researchers, comprising a total of 3,300 scientists from around the world selected in 21 research areas. The index uses data from papers published during the past 11 years to find the most highly cited researchers in the world. The current list includes 72 scientists from Japan, including 13 from RIKEN selected from four research areas.

  Based on Essential Science Indicators (ESI), the index looks at articles with the highest 1% of citations (Highly Cited Papers) in 21 areas covering the natural and social sciences, and selects around 3,000 researchers whose papers are highly cited for a number of years. Of the researchers chosen this year, 76 belonged to Japanese institutions. The index this year (2017) uses a database that covers the eleven years from January 2005 to December 2015. Dr. Sugiyama was chosen as one of 134 researchers (five Japanese) in the area of pharmacology & toxicology.

  Dr. Sugiyama was  first selected as one of highly cited researchers in 2001, when he was at the University of Tokyo. He was listed as the top (#1) scientist by ISI in 2007 in the preceding 11 years in the field of “Pharmacology and Toxicology”.
He was also chosen in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as a highly cited researchers after moving to RIKEN, showing  the level of recognition that Dr. Sugiyama’s work has gained internationally.
